The Lamborghini 400 GT, introduced in 1966 as successor to the groundbreaking 350 GT, marked a crucial turning point in the brand's early evolution, showcasing Lamborghini's growing confidence in blending performance with grand touring comfort.
Production began with the ultra-rare original 400 GT, also known as the “Interim”, of which only 23 units were made. These early cars retained much of the 350 GT’s character, including the same elegant body design by Carrozzeria Touring. Twenty examples were bodied in steel, while three were constructed using the famed Superleggera (Italian for “superlight”) aluminium method.

The 400 GT was powered by a front-mounted 3.9-litre (often referred to as 4-litre) V12 engine - an evolution of the 350 GT’s powerplant - producing 320 hp at 6,500 rpm. This engine would go on to become a cornerstone of Lamborghini’s identity, underpinning many of their high-performance models for decades. Power was delivered to the road through classic 72-spoke Borrani wheels wrapped in Pirelli Cinturato belted tyres.
Underneath, the car featured an advanced all-independent suspension system with unequal-length A-arms, coil springs, telescopic shock absorbers, and anti-roll bars, delivering a ride that was both composed and agile. Stopping power came from all-wheel Girling disc brakes, operated hydraulically through a dual-circuit system with servo assistance.
Inside, the 400 GT offered true grand touring luxury. Later in 1966, Lamborghini introduced the 400 GT 2+2 - a slightly revised model with a longer roofline and reworked rear section to accommodate a true four-seat layout. This version became the main production model, with more than 200 units built. Its added practicality made it especially appealing in the American market and helped establish Lamborghini as a serious player in the world of grand touring exotics.
In both its rare 2-seater form and the more practical 2+2, the Lamborghini 400 GT remains a significant milestone in Lamborghini’s story. It refined what the 350 GT started, carried forward the V12 legacy, and paved the way for icons like the Miura and Espada.
