The Maserati Kyalami: A Controversial Classic

The Maserati Kyalami, a notable GT coupé named after the Kyalami Grand Prix Circuit in South Africa, was produced by Italian manufacturer Maserati between 1976 and 1983.

Designed by Pietro Frua, it was based on the De Tomaso Longchamp but underwent significant modifications to achieve a sportier look. These included softened lines, quad-round headlights, and adjustments to its dimensions.

The interior boasted classic Maserati elements like Connolly leather upholstery and a well-equipped dashboard, enhancing its luxury appeal.

Mechanically, the Kyalami shared its underpinnings with the contemporary Maserati Quattroporte III, offering two V8 engine options over its production span: a 4.2 litre engine producing 261 horsepower and a later 4.9 litre engine with 276 horsepower.

Both engines were available with a five-speed manual or an optional three-speed automatic transmission. The top speed of the Kyalami was 149 mph.

Despite its performance capabilities and luxury GT appeal, the Kyalami's sales figures remained low. Only around 210 units were produced before production quietly ended in 1983 with more focus being put on the Maserati Biturbo.

Contributing factors likely included the car's association with the Longchamp, its high price tag compared to the Longchamp, and a general market shift towards more economical vehicles following the oil crisis of the 1970s.

The Kyalami's legacy remains somewhat controversial. Some enthusiasts see it as a capable and luxurious grand tourer unfairly overshadowed by its origins. Others criticise its connection to the Longchamp and view it as a missed opportunity for a truly new Maserati design.

As the last Maserati coupé to feature the iconic V8 engine, and the first developed under Alejandro de Tomaso's ownership, the Kyalami represents both an end and a beginning in Maserati's storied automotive history.
