Maserati Mistral: A Rare and Refined Italian Grand Tourer

Full production of the Mistral ran between 1964 and 1970. It was a “wolf in sheep’s clothing” Italian sports car, available in either a 2-door, 2-seat coupé or a 2-door, 2-seat spyder (convertible). When the Mistral was first released in 1964 it was initially available with a choice of two engines; 3.5 litre or 3.7 litre. From 1965 onwards, a 4.0 litre version was introduced. All variants were designed by Pietro Frua, a leading Italian coachbuilder and car designer during the 1950s and 1960s.

The Mistral oozes both refinement and elegance still to this day with its timeless classical interior design. Like the Sebring and the 3500 GT before it, the Mistral used Maserati’s legendary 6-cylinder racing engine and featured a 5-speed manual gearbox, though a Borg-Warner automatic was available. The car was quick and responsive with a top speed exceeding 140 mph, and one could easily imagine enjoying a spirited drive around the stunning coastal roads and dramatic mountain passes of Southern Europe.

It was the final and most refined evolution of Maserati’s six-cylinder GT lineage and was succeeded by the V8 Ghibli and the V8 Mexico. Its engine is a twin-cam, twin-spark, and is equipped with Lucas mechanical fuel injection and holds the distinction of being the last Maserati to use the company’s famous straight-six, derived directly from the Grand Prix-winning 250F.

The Mistral marked the beginning of Maserati’s enduring tradition of naming models after winds - Ghibli, Bora, Khamsin, Shamal, and Levante would all follow. Named after the brisk northerly wind of southern France, the Mistral embodied its namesake with elegance and force. Its sleek fastback silhouette, designed by Frua and constructed with steel panels complemented by lightweight aluminium for the doors, bonnet, and boot, gave it a poised yet dynamic stance.

Inside, the cabin was unmistakably Italian gran turismo, with comfortable leather seats, a clear, purposeful driving position, and a dashboard that balanced function with refined style. The wide front grille with its bold Trident badge and the generous rear hatch didn’t just enhance its presence, they made it a true driver’s GT, blending beauty with practicality.

Records show that despite strong demand, only 968 Mistrals were produced: 844 coupés and 124 Spyders. Slight variations in reporting exist, but this figure is widely documented online. With just 124 Spyders ever made, these open-top versions are particularly rare, turning many heads at car shows worldwide and attracting interest from new custodians at auction.
