Overview and Function

The Power Take-Off Unit (PTU), sometimes referred to as the PTO (Power Take-Off), is a core component of the Ferrari FF's advanced 4RM all-wheel drive system. Unlike traditional AWD systems, Ferrari's PTU engages only when necessary, preserving rear-wheel-drive handling while providing torque to the front wheels when additional traction is required.

Mounted at the front of the engine and connected directly to the crankshaft, the PTU transfers torque to a secondary gearbox that powers the front wheels. This engagement occurs in low-grip conditions, such as wet or slippery roads, enhancing control without compromising the rear-drive balance Ferrari is known for.

Engineering Significance

First introduced in the Ferrari FF, this system marked the debut of all-wheel drive in a Ferrari road car. The PTU allows the car to maintain rear-wheel dynamics during most driving scenarios while enabling all-wheel capability when needed. This innovation set a new standard for grand touring performance.
